Molotov cocktail attack targets Albanian prime minister’s office during anti-government protests
Thousands rally in Tirana over corruption allegations as clashes erupt between police and demonstrators, leaving several injured, roads closed
A Molotov cocktail attack was carried out Tuesday on the Prime Ministry building during anti-government protests in Albania’s capital.
Thousands gathered in front of the Prime Ministry following a call by the main opposition Democratic Party (PD), accusing the government of corruption.
Protesters, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, hurled Molotov cocktails, fireworks, smoke bombs and various objects at the building.
Police intervened using tear gas and water cannons. Clashes also erupted between demonstrators and security forces near the parliament building.
Several people were injured during the hours-long protests due to the effects of tear gas and other incidents.
Demonstrators also demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku, who was suspended Nov. 19 on corruption allegations, but later reinstated.
Hundreds of police officers were deployed during the protests, and several roads in Tirana were closed to traffic.
Anti-government demonstrations have been held in Albania in recent months, with opposition parties vowing to continue protesting.
